Doctoral Program in Modern Fiqh at UIN Ar-Raniry Highlights the Contribution of Sharia to National Legal Reform.
The Doctoral Program (PhD) in Modern Fiqh at the Graduate School of UIN Ar-Raniry emphasized the importance of strengthening contemporary Sharia studies as a tangible contribution to the development of Indonesia’s national legal system.
This statement was delivered by the Head of the Modern Fiqh Doctoral Program, Syahrizal Abbas, who served as the keynote speaker at a public lecture organized by the Graduate School of UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin on Monday (May 4, 2026), under the theme “The Contribution of Sharia Law to National Law.”
In his presentation, Prof. Syahrizal stressed that doctoral programs in Sharia studies carry a strategic responsibility to generate academic ideas capable of addressing the evolving dynamics of Indonesia’s national legal system.
According to him, Sharia studies must continue to develop progressively, not only at the conceptual level but also in providing practical solutions to contemporary legal issues in Indonesia.
“Doctoral programs in Sharia must become centers for the production of scientific ideas that contribute concretely to strengthening the national legal system, whether through theoretical development, academic research, or the formulation of legal policies,” he stated.
He further explained that the contribution of Sharia law to the national legal system has a strong constitutional foundation, as stipulated in the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, which provides space for the development of religious values in national and state life.
Prof. Syahrizal also highlighted Aceh as an important academic laboratory for the development of Islamic law in Indonesia, particularly through the implementation of Sharia in various aspects of governance, including the application of jinayat law.
According to him, both the academic experience and legal practice in Aceh can serve as important references for the advancement of Islamic legal studies at the national level.
The public lecture was part of an academic visit by the management of the Modern Fiqh Doctoral Program at UIN Ar-Raniry to the Graduate School of UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, which was also attended by the Program Secretary, Syarifah Rahmatillah.
In addition to the lecture, the visit included a consortium forum for doctoral programs in Sharia studies and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the two institutions as a concrete step to strengthen collaboration in implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.
The Director of the Graduate School of UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, Risnita, welcomed the initiative.
According to her, such academic collaboration is essential for strengthening scholarly networks among Islamic higher education institutions, while also encouraging the emergence of academic innovations that contribute to the development of Islamic law and the national legal system in the future.
